Fergus Quill  director

With a new name and a new director, University Jazz Band returns to perform the music of J Dilla. A seminal producer in Hip Hop, J Dilla’s approach to drum programming, with its loose or ‘drunk’ style, has been influential on a whole generation of Jazz musicians. Join University Jazz Band as they explore the relationship between J Dilla's innovations in hip-hop and his influence on jazz in the twentieth century.

Fergus Quill is a performer and composer who specialises in large-ensemble jazz music. He is the leader of the experimental big band Ferg’s Imaginary Big Band and regularly arranges and writes music for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the American jazz group Sun Ra Arkestra. He was named as one of J to Z’s on BBC Radio 3 ‘ones to watch for 2023’ and was the recipient of the Tina May Young Jazz Musician of The Year Award in 2022.
