One of Britain’s most respected pianists, Danny Driver is recognised internationally for his sophistication, insight and musical depth. A wide-ranging programme begins with music centred around a nocturnal theme. A gentle sunset, as depicted by Schumann, quickly gives way to increasingly dark and fantastical worlds from across two centuries of music, notably in Beethoven’s iconic ‘Moonlight’ Sonata. The second half pairs three of Ligeti’s Études – as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the composer’s birth – with an intriguing selection of contemporary miniatures, including York-based composer Martin Suckling’s occult-inspired work Orrery.
