Baudelaire & Piano

Three-time Spellemannprisen (Norwegian Grammy Awards) winner Susanna Wallumrød is a creator of bold, original and enrapturing music, capable of building worlds to lose yourself in. She has collaborated with artists such as singer-songwriters Jenny Hval and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy and has long been an interpreter of other people’s music, from AC/DC and Joy Division to Dolly Parton and Henry Purcell. Susanna has the ability to transform these works into music that sits comfortably alongside her own while never losing touch with what made the original – and the original composer of the song – so special. We are delighted to welcome Susanna to York as she joins forces with tape wizard Stina Stjern for truly magical interpretations of Baudelaire’s poetry, set to music for piano and vocals alongside tapes and tape recorders.

Here you will find a creepy cast of witches, pagans, wolves, perverts, thugs, ghosts, vampires and demons! The songs struggle with lust and saintliness, angels and demons and tenderness and sadism. Beauty with an edge of strangeness. Sin as a swallowing abyss. In Susanna’s haunting settings and performance, the poetry of Baudelaire has found its ideal transmitter. The ‘Critic’s Choice’ in The Financial Times, Baudelaire & Piano is ‘an undeniably dreamlike, immersive experience’ (The New European).

‘Her vocal performance is striking’ (Financial Times)
