Reflected light

The 24 offers pairs of pieces – each connected by their text or a compositional idea but sometimes separated by centuries. Ken Burton’s glorious Many are the wonders is based on Tallis’s Pentecostal motet while Fernando de las Infantas’s bitonal motet from the 1560s takes a totally different tack. Tallis and the Portuguese master Manuel Cardoso both embody longing in My soul thirsts after God while Nico Muhly is inspired by three Tudor masses based on a lost song. Orlande de Lassus uses sumptuous textures – so does Judith Weir but differently. David Hurd and Roxanna Panufnik both set sensuous texts from the Old Testament Song of Songs. An intriguing programme, with light from one elucidating the other.
