About the performers

‘A crucial and exhilarating band setting the world on fire’ (fRoots), The Darkening is the new band of the multi-instrumentalist and champion of the Northumbrian pipes, Kathryn Tickell. A composer, performer and educator, Tickell was awarded an OBE in 2015 in recognition of her extraordinary and genre-traversing career. The Darkening brings some of the oldest Northumbrian tunes and songs to life, intermingling them with new material and perspectives. Featuring dazzling duets and dark and dirty riffs, their combination of fresh sounds and ancient influences integrates the past and present in exhilarating and unexpected ways.
