Brahms Viola Sonata in E flat op. 120 no. 2
Selected as a BBC New Generation Artist in 2019, Timothy Ridout, one of the most sought-after violists of his generation, has already established an international career with concerto performances and festival appearances throughout Europe. He was awarded first prize in the Lionel Tertis Competition whilst still studying at the Royal Academy of Music, from where he graduated with the Queen's Commendation for Excellence. Tom Poster won the Royal Philharmonic Society's Inspiration Award for his lockdown Jukebox series with violinist Elena Urioste which brought a diverse selection of music to a wide online audience. He is founder and artistic director of the Kaleidoscope Ensemble, appointed Associate Ensemble at the Wigmore Hall in 2020.
Originally written for clarinet and piano, the two sonatas by Brahms are at the heart of the viola repertoire. Discovered relatively recently, the sixteen-year-old Britten wrote his short Elegy the day after leaving Gresham's School.
