This glorious programme of English song features two wonderful, and popular, song settings: Elgar's great song cycle 'Sea Pictures', performed with the composer's own piano score, and Butterworth's setting of six poems from AE Housman's 'A Shropshire Lad'. To 'Sea Pictures', Helen Charlston adds Finzi's posthumously-published 'Oh fair to see' which includes, as its final song, 'Since we loved' by Robert Bridges, a touching tribute to Finzi's wife. Roderick Williams continues with songs by Ireland and Michael Head.
Helen Charlston is established as one of the UK's most outstanding young singers, and is increasingly in demand, particularly for early music repertoire in which she is a regular performer in the York Early Music and London Handel festivals. As one of our leading singers, Roderick Williams enjoys a wide career on the concert platform and opera stage, in repertoire from the Baroque to world premieres. He also has a growing reputation as a composer.
The concert was recorded at the National Centre for Early Music on 9 June 2021.
Ticket holders will be able to watch this concert on demand for one week after the initial broadcast.
