JS Bach     Lobet den Herrn BVW 230

                  Easter & Ascension Oratorios:

‘Kommt, eilet und laufet’ BWV 249

‘Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen’ BWV 11

These two oratorios, scored for Bach’s festival orchestra (trumpets, timpani, oboes, flutes, bassoon and strings), tell the story of the Biblical events with the composer’s consummate skill at musical word-painting. They are not dissimilar to Bach’s church cantatas or Christmas Oratorio with the persuasive mixture of choruses, chorales, recitatives and arias. Bach’s music skilfully draws out the differing emotions in both narratives and frames each oratorio with truly ecstatic writing for choir and orchestra to create thoroughly heartfelt representations of and responses to these great events.  These two pieces are prefaced by the striking motet Lobet den Herrn, a setting of Psalm 117 for choir and continuo.
